I can actually give you a partial answer as to why it’s holding air. Assuming bias ply, the inner rubber inside the plies must be okay. The outer rubber is more or less chunking off the plies, and it’s as thick as that for sidewall rigidity and to be able to have a pocket for the white rubber fillet - so when it fails it fails all lump and cracky-like.
